RE: Earliest for a spring Alcan Trip

We did Alaska this spring. Left MD 2nd week of April. Crossed the Yukon the 2nd week of May. Denali on Memorial Day. No snow on the roads anywhere (except when we got snowed in at a WI COE CG which was opened just for us). No reservations made, or needed, anywhere. It was a little cool but that had more to do with spring being a little late this year.
We would do an early trip again. Snow is still on the mountain tops. There are no crowds. Most attractions are open.

RE: ALPENLITE FIFTH WHEELS

We have a 2006 34RLR Ltd. Bought it used but only 6 months old. So far it has had about 30K miles put on it. No, it has not been touble free, we suspect it has had far fewer problems than many others that have had far less use.
Yes, it is a shame that Western RV went out of business but not a major issue. There is very little that cannot be dealt with by a third party or was supplied to Western RV by a third party in the first place.

RE: Bug Bombs

The last time we put the trailer into extended storage, over 6 months, we set off bug bombs just as we closed the door for the last time. We had also done the dryer sheet thing & scattered moth balls all around.
6 months later it was opened for the first time. The odor of moth flakes & dryer sheets still lingered in the air.
There were NO bugs to be found anywhere.

RE: fiberglass repair to bedroom slideout

What a coincidence!!. I have an Alpenlite with the same problem. First noticed it earlier this year before a 12,000 mile trip to Alaska. It creeped a bit during that trip.
Tried a quick fix using a product called Marine Tex. This product usually hardens like steel but the temp was cold & I don't think I used enough hardener in the mix to compensate for the cold. The crack opened up again the next day on the road.
A permanent fix will involve grinding out the crack, working fiberglass chopstrand soaked in resin into the opened crack, sanding excess, then applying resin soaked fiberglass tape across the cracked area, sanding, finishing filler, sanding, maybe repeating a step then finally sanding smooth & painting.
There is nothing difficult about all of this. It is labour intensive. That is all. The great thing about working with fiberglass is that mistakes can be sanded out & done again.

RE: Trail Air or Mor/ryde

About what I was expecting. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Thanks. I have a MorRyde price. I also have the ability to do the TrailAir bolt on myself. Specs on the TrailAir brochure show it to be better (no surprise there). No comparison specs on the MoRyde. The IS system & disk brakes sure would be nice but are a bit beyond budget.

RE: Hershey Show

Rangerider, you must have met the same woman at the tent who was there when we arrived tuesday afternoon. She really needs to find herself a job that does not have any contact with the public.

Trail Air or Mor/ryde

We have had about enough of re arranging everything in the cabinets after hitting a few RR crossings.
Time to invest in something to make the ride smoother. We already have the Trail Air hitch. Would not be without it, or something similar.
Both Trail Air & Mor/ryde make big claims in suspension equalizer systems. Any thoughts either way?

RE: Hershey Show

Ah well, it is all just about history now. We did the dry camp thing on the old golf course. The only problem was an odor from from the sewage plant to the NE. We were on the NW corner, down a slight grade, & got out Friday morning just as the rain was starting. Once moving, we did not stop. Uneventful departure.
We were last at the show 2 years ago. Noticably smaller this year.

RE: Where to tell tire shop to jack.

I like doing this sort of thing myself. The leaf spring perch is good or on the frame just fwd or aft of the spring hanger. I have the 12 ton bottle jack & a 12" X 18" block of wood (stolen from a boatyard) that I carry around all the time. In addition I have 2 stands normally used for long term storage so that, if I wish, I can have all 4 wheels off the ground at the same time.
Years of jacking up & blocking 18,000# boats help build confidence in handling heavy things. A boat is far more unstable to handle than a trailer which, if things go wrong, is only going to fall back on its wheels.

RE: Exterior fiberglass color choices

Gel coat with a colour looks good but does not last, especially dark colours. You will get 2 or 3 good years if you are lucky then the chalking will begin.
Painting, especially with a marine product like Awlgrip or Emron will last many years but it is not a cheap process. The result will be a gloss better than any gel coat.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Nascarcruzin, Keep an eye out for us at the Hershey show. We won't be hard to find. Alpenlites are a rare breed east of the Mississippi.
Plan to get there Tuesday afternoon & do the drycamp thing on the golf course. See show on Wed & anything else on Thurs. Leave Fri.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

123 days for us from MD to AK & return. 1 month at home. Not enough traveling for 1 year for us. In 2 days we are off again. This time 63 days to PA, Ontario, upstate NY, VT, NH, back to MD then south to NC for a short while.

Anyone done the Hershey PA Show & stayed on the golf course dry camping nearby? Is it reasonably level & solid ground?

The CG just inside Bryce should be open. We were there late Oct/early Nov last year. It is dry camping. Lovely CG.

RE: Avoid Chesapeake Bay Bridge/US 50

Oh well, we have to do that bridge twice in the next week or so. EB next thurs, but passing through about 7:00P so traffic shpould not be too bad. WB a week tues, not a real busy time either.
Always something going on on that bridge.

RE: Generator Quiet Hours/Exhaust Fumes

In addition to keeping quiet time hours, run the generator only when necessary. The gennys which throttle down under light loads are far more prefered than a screaming cheap contractor type which runs full throttle all the time & has no sound shielding.

RE: Chena Marina RV Park Closing, RV traffic way off

We are also sad to see the Chena Marina RV park closed. We were there this year for the Memorial Day weekend in May. It was far from full but doing better than many others we passed through in AK & YK. We saw many rentals on the road & a surprising number of AK plates but also far fewer lower 48 plates than we expected to see.
Yes, fuel was expensive. It accounted for about 25% of our total costs from MD to AK. No way were we going to sacrifice this trip.
Maybe it is time for N America to take a page out of the European book of RVing. Get out of the rolling mansions. Downsize to something that does not need 40' of parking space & guzzles over a gallon every 10 miles.

RE: Protection for the Front of 5th with fiber glass gell coat

2nd vote for the Mequires sealant. Been using it on my saltwater kept boat for years. Once a year use after a prearation with a cleaner wax to get stains off.
Recently used Starbrite RV bug remover followed by a simillar marine product to Mequires. Front cap looks like new.
